Harold E. Heide Collection, 1942-1945.

The Harold E. Heide Collection consists of xeroxed copies of eight letters (15 pages) written by Harold E. Heide to his wife between 1942 and 1945, and a one-page excerpt from a publication that mentions work undertaken by Heide in the summers of 1943 and 1944 (Anderson, Eskil, "Asbestos and Jade Occurrences in the Kobuk River Region, Alaska," Territory of Alaska Department of Mines Pamphlet No. 3-R, Juneau, Alaska, 1945). At the time, Heide was an employee of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in charge of explorations for strategic minerals in northern Alaska. Part of a collection of approximately sixty letters dealing with Alaska, these items were selected because they contain information on exploration and/or Inupiaq Eskimo life or mention well-known individuals.
